Week of 4.13.20

Packet #1 contains the activities for this week. Our letter is W and our theme is Spring is Here! (Please see the attached revised packet directions–I forgot to add the Wind Sock directions to the original.)
Here is a picture of the materials for this week:
Journal–try making a Journal entry this week. Weather is a W word. Draw a picture in your Journal that shows what you would wear in rainy weather. (Alternative–draw what you would wear in your favorite kind of weather.)
Start growing your bean! Put  it in a window where you can check on it every day. The paper towel may dry out in the sun–you can always re-wet it or change it out if you have to. Just not too wet–if there is too much moisture the beans may rot.
Make your weather wheel and use it every morning. Maybe you can sing our weather song while you do it? (“What’s The Weather, what’s the weather, what’s the weather like today? Is it sunny? Is it rainy? What’s the weather like today?”)
Go outside and look for worms in your garden or in your lawn.
Make your wind sock and hang it in your room! Better yet, hang it somewhere where it may catch a little breeze and float along in the air.
Try using water colors to paint a picture this week.
For a sensory bin experience--cook some plain spaghetti, let it cool, place it in a bin or a bowl, add some oil, then put your hands in it. It feels like ooey slimy worms! Super  “ew!,” but super fun!
Color the plant life cycle worksheet that is attached. As your bean grows, look at the worksheet so you can follow your bean’s progress!
Handwriting Without Tears books–I have included these in packet #1 this week if you would like to try them with your child. We have missed a few letters since the last time we worked on these as a class (letters M, N, V). I sent home a worksheet in the last group of packets that showed the direction for our lines and curves for each letter. If you’d  like, your child can work on the “missing” letters before they work on the W page this week. Some letters have a “pre-stroke” page and some just go right to the letter. M’s pre-stroke page is on page 58. 
M pre-stroke–Mouse begins with M (mmmm). Crayon goes at the top arrow. Have your child use their crayon to follow the mouse. The mouse starts at the top and goes straight down to get the cheese, then he jumps back up (meaning, the crayon is lifted up and placed back down at the top) and slides down, slides up then goes straight down to get the other cheese.
Letter M (page 59) to make an M, we place the crayon on the smiley face, and make a big line down, then jump back up and big line slides down, slides back up, then straight down. When your child has completed their 4 Ms, they can color the mice.
N pre-stroke (page 60)–Nozzle begins with N (nnnn). (Explain what a nozzle is if they don’t know) A nozzle can make the water squirt straight. The water squirts straight down, then slides down, then squirts straight up.
Letter N (page 61)–start at the smiley face, make a big line down, then jump back up and big line slides down, then slides straight up. When your child has completed 4 Ns, they can color the nozzle.
V and W pre-stroke (page 64)–the kids in this picture on going on a V roller coaster ride. Do you see the v-v-van in the background? Put the crayon on the roller coaster and make a big line slide down then slide back up.
Letter V (page 65)–Van begins with V (vee or vuh). Start at the smiley face, big line slides down, then big line slides up. When your child has completed the 4 Vs, they can color the van.
**Letter W (page 66)–Wagon and wheel begin with W (wuh). Start at the smiley face, big line slides down, then big line slides up, then big line slides down again, and big line slides up again.**
A few notes about our Handwriting books. Please do not worry if your child does not make a perfect letter. We are more concerned this year with their pencil grip (crayon in the thumb and forefinger, other fingers curled under) rather than learning to write the letters. All they need to do is try. And if they aren’t feeling it today, no worries!!! Try again another time. They will revisit learning to write letters in Pre-K and Kindergarten.
